The Stem Cell Donor

  • Chapter

Transfusion Medicine

Abstract

The chapter focuses on the donor of peripheral blood stem cells for her sister, who is due a transplant for acute myeloid leukemia. The donor is given granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) to stimulate stem cell mobilization. Side effects of G-CSF, vascular catheter insertion, and the blood stem cell harvest are discussed. The benefits and the risks of mobilized peripheral blood versus bone marrow as a source of stem cells are compared from the donor’s and recipient’s angle.
