Abstract
This chapter will outline the need for Sustainable Development Goals (SDPs) within the realm of education. A school is more than a centre of learning; it is also a centre of support and pastoral care for the most vulnerable in society, including those who live in, or experience, poverty and discrimination on the basis of their gender and/or socio-economic status. It is where many will access basic provisions which they are not able to within their home or community environment, such as food and health provision. Therefore, as the nucleus of a person’s development emotionally, physically and mentally, it is our duty of care to ensure that education meets the needs of all.
Based on a case study of a school where projects/strategies have been put into place to drive inclusion and equality within education, this chapter will explore their impact and outline how centres of education can be more inclusive and equitable. The projects included will be:
-
Diversity within the curriculum
-
Gender projects: Girl-KindNE, STEM Club
-
Food projects: Breakfast Clubs, Free School Meal provision during Covid-19
-
Hygiene projects: Canny Clean Hygiene Bank
-
Student Council—a voice for all
-
Literacy strategies
-
