Abstract
The oral cavity is a unique organ system due to the direct interaction that individuals have with it on a day-to-day basis, as well as its key functions in digestion, speech, and esthetics. Consequently, its tissues are highly susceptible to the biological, environmental, and social phenomena that contribute to aging and can provide a “mirror” to one’s overall health. Given their roles in advocating for optimal oral health outcomes throughout the human lifespan, clinicians, researchers, policymakers, and health educators must be familiar with the expected effects of aging on the oral cavity. Strategies for mitigating the effects of aging on the oral cavity require a life course approach and are best implemented starting at birth.
