Abstract
Plastics are an important growth market for the oil and gas industry, but the enormous amount of unrecycled waste is creating a backlash that could lead to plastic bans around the world. The only viable alternative is a circular economy based on reuse and recycling. Building such a circular economy would require the oil and gas industry to work with multiple customer industries, end consumers, and governments around the world. The blockchain could be used to build out an entire ecosystem, starting with sourcing recycled plastics, certifying their origin, and extending to trading of materials through its entire lifecycle.
