Abstract

Aging Americans greatly influence the delivery of healthcare around the world. Perioperative leadership must understand and appreciate the challenges that the geriatric population presents and the increased risks associated in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative setting, in order to deliver high quality and safe surgical care. Perioperative care rendered to this vulnerable population is complicated and requires a multidisciplinary approach with a cautious eye toward the epidemiological and pathophysiological changes that occur with aging. Nursing considerations must include accurate assessments and proficient clinical management of these patients across the perioperative continuum. Strategies that are customized to the geriatric population will meet the specific needs of the patient and will mitigate possible risks through the use of preventative measures. Potential implementation of the Geriatric 5 Ms and the Geriatric Surgery Verification program can lead to collaborative care and will proffer enhanced patient outcomes.
