Abstract

Both pre-existing and postoperative neurocognitive impairment and psychiatric illness are highly prevalent among the geriatric population. This chapter discusses the bearings these preoperative and postoperative conditions have on surgical outcomes. Risk factors for the development of postoperative neurocognitive impairment and psychiatric illness along with methods of prevention are reviewed. In the event that postoperative neurocognitive impairment or psychiatric illness does develop, guidance on how it can be diagnosed and managed appropriately is provided.
