Notes
- 1.
Studies with “culture” or “cultural” in the title, keywords, or abstract.
- 2.
The number of articles in the final simple, after removing articles that did not meet the inclusion criteria, was 28.
- 3.
Another approach might be related to the one adopted in (intangible) cultural heritage. Most of the studies in this area that have been reviewed for this synthesis, including the proceedings of Cross-Cultural Design (Rau, 2018, 2020) do not fit in either taxonomic or contingent perspectives, as they tend to focus on the design, evaluation and / or development of novel technological systems to augment and personalize the cultural heritage experience in some way (Lu et al., 2011; Wecker, Kuflik & Stock, 2017; Cardoso et al., 2020; Avram & Maye, 2016; Volkmar, Wenig & Malaka, 2018; Lu et al., 2019; Ruiz-Calleja et al., 2023; Karran et al., 2015; Gou, 2021; Petrelli, 2019; Not & Petrelli, 2019; Ardissono et al., 2012). This perspective is mostly technological and the cultural aspect is narrowed down to museum and arts.
