Abstract

Despite years of research identifying healthcare disparities as a fundamental concern, health equity remains an elusive goal for many communities. Healthcare disparities are fueled by upstream factors that lead to avoidable differences in healthcare outcomes and reduce the quality of life for racially and ethnically diverse populations. While no single approach will resolve healthcare disparities, addressing the most significant barriers to and strategies for achieving health equity could provide a crucial step to improve outcomes. This chapter highlights recommendation 2 of the Future of Nursing 2020–2030 report and is guided by the Institute for Health Improvement’s (IHI) white paper entitled Achieving Health Equity: A Guide for Health Care Organizations.

Future of Nursing 2020–2030: Recommendation 2

By 2023, state and federal government agencies, healthcare and public health organizations, payers, and foundations should initiate substantive actions to enable the nursing workforce to address social determinants of health and health equity more comprehensively, regardless of practice setting.
