Abstract
As a way to frame the papers in this book, this introduction describes some of the developments in statistics education over the past several decades that inform the current focus on data science education. Progress in curriculum development, software development and the establishment of scholarly communities are discussed. The concept of “context” as an underlying component of both statistics and data science is examined, with an example that suggests how new methods of collecting and sharing data may expand our view of “context” and raise new questions for how students should encounter data.
