Abstract

What’s the main objective of axiomatic work? Is it to derive axiomatic characterizations of particular solution mappings, mappings that are used in the real world for example, or mappings that have come up in theoretical work? I’ll argue against the commonly held view that it is. Rather, it’s to understand the implications of axioms, when imposed in various combinations, and to uncover trade-offs between axioms, or between parameterized versions of axioms.
