Abstract
Xenotransplantation (XTx) is making scientific advancements to become a clinical reality, and as a way to decrease organ shortage. After approval for adult kidney XTx it is thought that cardiac XTx for children with congenital heart disease will follow. Additionally, if kidney xenografts are approved for adults in need it may be unethical to deprive children who are in need of a kidney from the benefits of receiving an organ alternative. Implementing novel and risky technologies in children, a vulnerable population, can be daunting. This chapter intends to describe some ethical, consent/assent, and psychosocial challenges for consideration that may arise if XTx is approved for children.
