Noninvasive Mechanical Ventilation

Abstract

Air leaks in noninvasive ventilation play a central role from the beginning until the end of the therapy. It is important for the clinician to understand the impact that they can have on the ventilatory therapy, to know the main causes, and to recognize how they can affect the respiratory pattern. Having this know-how, their attitudes and decisions will be more precise and helpful to the patient.

Some simple strategies can help to minimize air leaks, but sometimes it may be necessary to change the interface or to change the inspiratory and/or expiratory pressures and times to achieve better ventilatory compliance.
