Abstract

Available resources for specialty burn care are often limited by geography and provider knowledge. Telemedicine provides an important adjunct to direct clinical burn care for initial triage and management of injuries and for clinical follow-up. Although adoption has been slow, current recommendations incorporate use of early telemedicine consultation for many types of burn injury. Wide adoption of telemedicine in burn care continues to be limited by both provider and institutional reticence; access limitations resulting from the novel coronavirus pandemic have fostered broader interest and use. Numerous opportunities exist for improvement of telemedicine processes, particularly with regard to provider licensing and credentialing. In spite of challenges with adoption and implementation, telemedicine represents an important mechanism for providing appropriate and timely care for burn-injured patients.
