Abstract
To become a competent surgeon and physician, a strong grounding in anatomy is crucial. An understanding of sinonasal embryology and development is required to appreciate the complex anatomy of the region. The greatest challenges of sinus surgery, such as navigating the frontal sinus drainage pathway, occur because of variation in embryology and development.
The chronology of sinus development also dictates the pattern of sinus disease in paediatric and adult populations and influences surgical approach. For example, the frontal sinus remains as a small pit until 2 years of age, eliminating the risk of frontal sinusitis in this age group. An overview of the embryological and childhood development of the nose and paranasal sinuses are presented herein.
