Abstract
Visuals are an especially valuable way to reinforce the messages of any presentation. Despite their value, they are neglected by many presenters, who rely solely on the spoken or written word to put their message across. However, there are at least ten reasons why visual elements in presentations increase audience engagement and make the presentation much more memorable. To craft a compelling presentation often takes a high level of effort and investment of time. Much of this effort involves creating text. If appropriate visuals are chosen, the need for text is much lower and thus a considerable amount of time can be saved. Realistically, few audience members will have the inclination both to listen carefully to what the presenter says and to read the text on the slides. One or the other will inevitably not occur. However, it is reasonable to suppose an audience can look at visuals and listen to the presenter simultaneously. Anyone who has listened to a number of presentations will have experienced being extremely bored by some presenters. Indeed, there is a sense in which PowerPoint now automatically evokes a tired reaction. To avoid this association of PowerPoint with lacklustre, text-heavy presentations, try using more photographic images and video clips to engage the audience. Skilfully employed visuals add fresh vigour and interest to a presentation.
