Abstract
In this research, the authors investigate the change in global production and international export trade of major tropical fruits from 1961 to 2020. Major tropical fruits include bananas, pineapples, mangoes, papayas, and avocados. These fruits are cultivated in the equatorial, subequatorial, tropical, and subtropical climates of the Earth. The authors analyze the transformation of global gross receipts and physical exports of this subgroup by species and in their aggregate over the analyzed period. The authors also describe the changing importance of major tropical fruits in the corresponding global indicators for fruit and berry products as a whole for production and trade. Bananas, pineapples, mangoes, papayas, and avocados are found to have increased their share of the world’s total gross fruit and berry harvests between 1961 and 2020. As a result, the content of major tropical fruits in global fruit and berry production has increased from 19.12% in 1961 to 25.30% in 2020 (i.e., 6.18%). As for international trade, despite the increase in its physical volume over the analyzed period, the importance of bananas in global fruit and berry exports has declined from 26.08% in 1961 to 21.79% in 2020. Nevertheless, pineapples, mangoes, papayas, and avocados saw an increase in their share of the corresponding world total between 1961 and 2020. As a result, the major tropical fruit also increased their importance in global physical exports from 26.87% in 1961 to 29.78% in 2020 (i.e., 2.91%). The steady increase in demand for pineapples, mangoes, papayas, and avocados from people in developed countries with higher average per capita incomes has contributed significantly to this process.
