Abstract

Assessment of the effectiveness of dairy cattle breeding and the main directions for improving the sector are still relevant under today’s conditions. The paper aims to analyze the efficiency of dairy cattle breeding and suggest main directions of its improvement in agricultural organizations and small agribusiness subjects of the Russian Federation and the Penza Region. In the authors’ opinion, to increase the effectiveness of dairy cattle breeding, it is necessary to improve reproduction of herd, strengthen forage reserve, and improve material and technical base. Nowadays, the Penza Region has one breeding plant and eight pedigree reproducers that reproduce pedigree cattle for agricultural organizations of the region. This number of enterprises is insufficient for increasing the sector’s effectiveness. The development of dairy cattle breeding is characterized by intensive factors because the gross milk production is increasing while the number of cows is decreasing. The high capital intensity of dairy cattle breeding limits the possibility of intensive development in small-scale farming. The implementation of digital transformation will strengthen the cooperation of small agribusinesses, making it possible to resume the growth rate of milk production in private subsidiary farms of the population. Significant government support is needed for expanded production in the dairy sector.
