Functional Limb Salvage

Abstract

This chapter will explore the behind-the-scenes activities of Case Management and Social Work professionals who interface daily with the Limb Service medical and nursing teams. The roles and activities of Case Manager Discharge Planners and Social Workers are described, followed by case-based studies which highlight the complexities of safe throughput and discharge planning for medically ill limb patients. Hospital and Health System Corporate initiatives which contribute to the limb service directly or which are common to all in-patient services are reviewed, with a view to establishing best-practice methodology for safe, effective, and ethical throughput enhancement. Lessons learned from the COVID-19 experience will be carried forward into the post-COVID era.
