Abstract

Diabetes in aging communities imposes a substantial personal and public health burden by virtue of its high prevalence, its capacity to cause disabling vascular complications, the emergence of new non-vascular complications, and the effects of frailty. Diabetes, frailty, and cognitive dysfunction are closely related to the mechanisms of aging. Frailty is a geriatric syndrome and represents a state of multisystem impairments leading to decreased physiological reserve and resistance to stressors, leaving patients more vulnerable to poor health outcomes. It is not unusual for frail older adults to have varying degrees of “organ failures,” including failure in skin, one of the largest organs, thus increasing the likelihood of impaired healing and biomechanical complications in foot and ankle. In this chapter, we discuss backgrounds in diabetes, diabetic foot ulceration, and frailty, impacts of frailty on health outcomes in diabetes and diabetic foot ulceration, screening tools for frailty status in people with diabetes and diabetic foot ulceration. We also discuss potential solutions to manage frailty status.
