Abstract

Earlier chapters assumed poor place management only produced crime within the manager’s place. In this chapter, and the next two, we examine the influence of place management on crime at nearby places: crime radiation—crime flowing from the place into its environment. We call that nearby environment a place’s purlieu. Three types of research suggest crime may radiate into the purlieus of high crime places. A large set of studies of showing land uses are correlated with crime in their vicinities. These studies, though tantalizing, have too many deficiencies to treat them as providing good evidence for radiation. Another large number of studies show that crime prevention at places reduces crime nearby. This is stronger evidence for radiation. A single study provides direct evidence of radiation of theft from high theft shops. Overall, we should be concerned about radiation of crime from high crime locations.
