Abstract

Problems with adherence to medical treatments and medical recommendations are a well-recognized and costly concern in pediatric healthcare. Although the concern is well-recognized, there continues to considerable variability in how adherence is defined and measured in children and adolescents with a chronic disease. In this chapter, we review (1) the definition of adherence versus compliance; (2) describe the different types of adherence and nonadherence; and (3) summarize rates of adherence in different pediatric chronic disease.
