Abstract
There are many ways of tackling the subject of men and marriage in mid-twentieth-century England. Looking narrowly at consent, celebration and consummation shows elements of masculinity such as domesticity, breadwinning, romance and sexuality in relation to social class, race, religion, locality and generation. This book unravels the process of getting married, and by drawing on a variety of sources, highlights some of the changes, continuities and contradictions of masculinity.
