Abstract
The socio-economic benefits of Nigerian Inland Waterways System are vital to the growth of the Country. The study collected secondary data from Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and relevant stakeholders. The statistical analysis of the data collected clearly shows that Inland Waterways’ activities facilitate commerce, promote wealth creation, alleviate poverty and create job opportunities through the ancillary sector of boat building and other infrastructural support facilities leading to income generation, improved well-being of the citizens and by extension enhance national development. Furthermore, the utilisation of the services provided by Inland Waterways Transportation eases excessive traffic pressure on other transportation sub-sectors such as rail, road and air. It also provides support to agriculture and industrial production, inter- and intra-country trade, tourism and administrative services that are key to national development. This means that if the Inland Waterways transport operation is effectively and carefully utilised, it could be a driving force for economic growth and enhanced national development of any nation. The study therefore recommends that, Nigerian government should include the sector in the priority list of her developmental projects, as an effective way of wealth creation and sustainable economic empowerment of the people.
