Spondylolisthesis

Abstract

Spondylolisthesis, the subluxation of adjacent vertebra, is a common pathology and when surgery is indicated it often includes an instrumented fusion. However, pedicle screw placement in these patients may be made challenging due to dysplastic/aberrant anatomy and small incision/exposure given the limited number of levels that are typically fused. Enabling technologies such as navigation or robotics may be utilized to aid in instrumentation, and these technologies have been shown to potentially improve screw accuracy and decrease intraoperative fluoroscopy time. Additionally, the utilization of robotic assistance may allow the surgeon to optimize insertional torque (by maximizing screw diameter, length, and medialization) and allow for percutaneous placement of screws if needed.
