Abstract
Total joint arthroplasty (TJA) performed in the outpatient setting is increasing due to several factors and was increased substantially after the COVID pandemic of 2020. Subsequently, detailed medical evaluation, medical assessment, and medical comorbidity perioperative optimization are critical for safe and effective rapid discharge following outpatient arthroplasty. While some predictors of failure to discharge home the same day following TJA have been identified, more robust studies will elucidate the barriers to outpatient TJA and allow for further improvements to protocols. This chapter will highlight current medical evaluation, surgical risk stratification tools, and patient optimization protocols for outpatient TJA.
