Abstract

In his work, Jan Broekman has consistently put into question social contract theory and the central position of the individual human subject. This position has inspired us in our analysis of some of the seminal texts on friendship that philosophers and mythologoi, narrators, have transmitted to us. Friendship as mutual goodwill, anchored in the experience of vulnerability, a friend as heteros autos, always present in my most intimate reactions, friendship as a disposition fed by active gift giving in frequent interaction, but also friendship as mutual tolerance of otherness: these are the strands of thought that we explore in this article.

Notes

  1. 1.

‘A worldless love’: that was how Hannah Arendt has characterized her relation with Heidegger, which was (inter alia) a way to say that this was an impossible love.
