Multidimensional Signals and Systems

Abstract

The theory of signals and systems is a well established subject in the curricula of electrical engineering, communications, signal processing, and control theory. It provides indispensible tools for the analysis and design of complex technical systems as well as for understanding natural processes or for describing interdependencies in economy. Most courses and textbooks on signals and systems are confined to one-dimensional, time-dependent quantities. However, there are many examples for multidimensional signals which depend on two or more independent variables: images of all kinds are described by two dimensions in space, video frame sequences depend on space and time. The propagation of acoustic or electromagnetic waves in fluid or solid media requires one to three spatial dimensions plus time. The same is true for the transport of matter by diffusion or for the transport of heat by conduction. This book gives an introduction to the field of multidimensional signals and systems with two objectives in mind:

  • The theory shall be accessible to readers with a solid background in one-dimensional signals and systems as well as in the topics of undergraduate mathematics as taught to engineers. All further theoretical concepts are developed in the course of the book.

  • The presentation shows how the theoretical concepts of multidimensional signals and systems can be applied to various practical situations.
