Abstract

This chapter discusses the thematic scope of the book’s foci areas and their contested nature in scholarly circles and public policy debates. It offers critical reflections on the global politics of forced migration arguing that nation-centric asylum policies continue to escalate internationally leading to a stressed international protection system. A combination of de-territorialisation and externalisation of asylum processing means that the contemporary refugee is once again synonymous with the undesirable, excluded and rightless of the kind depicted in Hanah Arendt’s writings on authoritarianism and statelessness in between the world wars. The chapter highlights that the politics of social and political exclusion vis-à-vis asylum seekers has continued unabated for much of the last few decades despite an ostensible commitment to international human rights norms. Furthermore, the chapter offers reflections on the COVID-19 pandemic which has brought to light a new politics of deprivation and statelessness-like conditions. And while the third decade of the new millennium is vastly different to the first half of the twentieth century that produced the post-war refuges crises, the same discriminatory ideological forces endure, in particular right wing movements and extremist ideologies. Such exclusionary, nationalist approaches to humanitarian crises and forced migration have come to shape, even dominate, a new politics of exclusion and oppression within many states including in Australia, the case study for this book.
