Interdisciplinary Insights from the Plague of Cyprian

Abstract

This chapter is divided into two sections that examine the evidence concerning various waves of infection during the Plague of Cyprian pandemic. Dr. Sabine Huebner’s Plague of Cyprian timeline and origin theories are also considered in detail here. Archaeological/numismatic evidence from the third-century Danubian Brigetio region (in modern-day Hungary) is examined as potentially presenting a microcosm of the Plague of Cyprian. The chapter covers likely why the Plague of Cyprian eventually ended and also whether the later stages of the pestilence were associated with the death of Emperor Claudius II (Gothicus). We broach the question of the impact of the Plague of Cyprian on the broader Roman Empire—a topic that we will explore in much greater detail in Part IV.
