Retrospective and Differential Pathogen Diagnosis

Abstract

This chapter focuses on the key and difficult issue of retrospective pathogen diagnosis in regard to the Plague of Cyprian. Having eliminated a wide range of pathogenic suspects in Part I (including a number of VHFs), we analytically turn our attention to considering the filoviruses. Most of these are differentially eliminated quickly through our systems-synthesis methodology. A far more detailed examination of the Ebola virus (EBOV) and Marburg virus (MARV) evolutionary lineages produces the conclusion that the MARV evolutionary lineage, from a wide variety of analytical interdisciplinary perspectives, is by far the more likely to have been the probable pathogenic cause of the Plague of Cyprian.
