Abstract
Urbanization has become a universal phenomenon in the contemporary world and is characterised as the key determinant of social transformation. It is responsible for both development and apprehensions to the concerned space. Urban places have remained the desired location for millions of people residing in the countryside owing to progression opportunities and superior health, education and livelihood facilities. Apart from assuring qualitative life to residents directly, urban centers also contribute to the economic pool of the nation through skill and capital generation. The nation's prosperity and advancement are substantially designed and geared by the level of its urbanization and vice-versa. The present chapter attempts to explain the level of urbanization and its nature in Haryana state over a period. The evaluation of secondary data and information reveals that liberal industrialization policies of the government have augmented the urban process and modified the towns’ size. The significant share of geographical space with the national capital region also supported the urbanization in the state. The state's current urbanization ratio (34.88%) is higher than the nation’s (31.16%) average. Another finding reveals that compared to western and south-western districts of the state, northern and eastern belts are more urbanised due to some extra advantages. There is a need for a decentralized approach regarding establishing economic activities and developing necessary infrastructure in less urbanised areas to get balanced and sustainable urban growth in the state.
