Abstract

In this chapter, the pathophysiology, causes, diagnosis, clinical manifestations, and management of acute and chronic respiratory alkalosis are discussed. Hypoxic stimulation of medullary respiratory center that causes hyperventilation is also presented. Selected conditions of respiratory alkalosis such as anxiety-hyperventilation syndrome, high altitude, drugs, central nervous system diseases, pulmonary diseases, sepsis, liver disease, and pregnancy are discussed succinctly.
