Abstract
This chapter deals with the pathogenesis, genetic and acquired causes, diagnosis, clinical manifestations, treatment, and factors that maintain metabolic alkalosis. A detailed description of kidney transport mechanisms that promote bicarbonate reabsorption and hydrogen ion secretion as well as inherited transport mechanisms of sodium chloride is presented. Special conditions that cause metabolic alkalosis such as genetic disorders, diuretics, vomiting, milk (calcium) alkali syndrome, congenital chloridorrhea, and laxative abuse are discussed in detail.
