Abstract

Dentistry is heavily reliant on X-rays for the diagnosis of dental disease and assessment of treatment outcome. Conventional dental radiography remains an important everyday tool in spite of the rise of sophisticated CBCT imaging technology. This chapter explains the essential principles of intra- and extraoral dental radiographic techniques including the parallax method. Although these principles are ingrained into dentists, readers from other health care professions will not have come across them before. The principles of CBCT imaging are described through clear informative diagrams. All techniques have shortcomings, and these are also mentioned. A plethora of drawings and patient images are provided to illustrate every principle and pitfall that is discussed. In this way, CBCT and conventional dental radiography are compared and contrasted.
