Leadership Mentoring: Peer Mentoring Experience in Nursing Education

Abstract

Mentoring is a relationship between a novice and an expert practitioner, wherein the mentor inspires the novice to achieve their learning. In nursing, mentoring is considered an effective leadership strategy linked to organizational growth, enhancing quality improvement, financial productivity, and the organization’s strategic development. Peer mentoring is a mutual relationship where both mentor and mentee are at the same stage of experience or age, which is common in higher education. This chapter shares our journey as a mentor-mentee. We described how our relationship turned into peer mentoring with reciprocal nature over time. During the past 6 years, we have understood each other and worked together on different occasions related to teaching, professional development, and research. We described in detail the progress of our mentorship experience and the tasks that opened other doors to practice more mentorship qualities. Finally, although it has informally occurred, we believe that our mentorship relationship is successful and productive in meeting our personal and professional goals. Therefore, we will remain in this relationship, and the relationship will be expanded to include others in this mentorship journey.
