Reimagining Education: Studies and Stories for Effective Learning in an Evolving Digital Environment

Abstract

Higher education that empowers students to address the global challenges in our rapidly changing world must impart more than knowledge. Students must also develop and practice the skills needed to respond insightfully when faced with increasingly complex, uncertain, and ambiguous issues. This chapter examines the impact of higher education instructional pedagogies upon the learner’s development of knowledge, skills, and capacity for addressing current challenges and needs. After presenting the Online Learning Environment Survey (OLES, Trinidad et al., Aust J Educ Technol 21(1). https://doi.org/10.14742/ajet.1343, 2005) as a framework for evaluating online instruction, we focus on doctoral pedagogies in relation to the goal of building research scholars. We then describe an experiential research course in which doctoral students build an active understanding of the research process by designing and conducting original research, and consider the course components in light of the OLES. The chapter concludes with a brief discussion of how the integration of higher education instructional pedagogies, applied research, and community connections can build student agency and empower students to address future challenges.
