Matrix Head and Neck Reconstruction

Abstract

Squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue is the most commonly diagnosed cancer of the oral cavity. It is aggressive due to the abundant lymphatics and muscularized structure of the tongue and commonly requires reconstructive surgery. The tongue is essential for swallowing and speaking. Specifically, the oral tongue is used for speaking and manipulating food, and the base of the tongue is essential for swallowing. Thus, great care must be taken when reconstructing tongue defects in order to maintain appropriate mobility and restore these essential functions as well as maintain an open airway and avoid fistula formation.
