Abstract
Scapular free flaps are a popular donor site for the reconstruction of palatal and maxillary defects. While first described in 1988, free flaps from the iliac crest and fibula were used more widely until 2010. The shifted interest towards the scapula as a donor site was due to a combination of advantages including decreased hospitalizations, fewer complications, and increased patient prognosis and quality of life.
