Abstract

The Karapandzic flap (KF) is a versatile procedure that allows closure of a larger (up to 90%) upper or lower full-thickness lip defects. Because the flap is designed to take advantage of the position of the facial artery and keeps the fibers of the orbicularis oris oriented as they would lie naturally, it preserves good vascularization and sphincteric function. It is also a single-stage repair, and it can be used even if there is involvement of the commissures. The technique takes advantage of being able to conceal incisions in the relaxed skin tension lines including nasolabial folds and submental crease, thereby affording a good aesthetic result.
