Abstract
The helical rim forms the outside border of the auricle and visually frames the ear. The skin covering the helical rim on the lateral surface is thin and tightly adherent to the underlying cartilage without laxity. This usually precludes rim defects from being able to be closed primarily. As a result, advancement flaps which recruit surrounding cartilage and skin are well suited for closure of helical rim defects.
