Abstract
Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease primarily caused by microorganisms in the dental plaque biofilm. The immune-inflammatory reactions that are provoked by microorganisms cause progressive destruction of periodontal structures. However, the pathogenesis of the periodontal disease is multi-directional thus could be influenced by many risk factors affecting the disease susceptibility of an individual. Plaque-induced disease could also manifest as a part of systemic disease as well as other diseases/conditions that could affect the periodontium. Moreover, the coexistence and close interrelationship between periodontal disease and systemic diseases such as diabetes mellitus have made the disease control more challenging. Therefore, careful case assessment is mandatory in order to diagnose the periodontal status, as well as in identifying any involvement of the systemic diseases/conditions affecting the periodontium. This chapter discusses case assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning of a patient presented with plaque-induced periodontal disease, periodontal abscesses and systemic involvement.
