Abstract

Schwannoma is a benign neoplasm of Schwann cells. It can occur in the head and neck region and is most commonly found on the tongue intraorally. Schwannoma presents as an asymptomatic, slow-growing solitary lump. Occasionally, patients may also report pain and paraesthesia. Histologically, a schwannoma shows an encapsulated tumour with the characteristic ‘Antoni A’ and ‘Antoni B’ patterns. ‘Antoni A’ shows a hypercellular area of palisaded spindle cells with elongated nuclei. The acellular eosinophilic area in between the palisaded nuclei is termed the Verocay body. ‘Antoni B’ area is hypocellular and the cells are arranged in a more disorganized pattern. The treatment for this lesion is surgical excision and recurrence is unlikely.
