Abstract

The term “metaverse” is derived from the concept of a “universe” or “multiverse” which is a virtual world, digital space, or immersive parallel reality. The metaverse is a concept that refers to a virtual world that is fully immersive and interactive, where the users can interact with each other in a seamless and realistic way. The metaverse is being driven by advancements in technology, such as the Internet, artificial intelligence, and virtual and augmented reality, and with this potential to revolutionize the Internet, the metaverse is gaining a lot of attention and investment from tech giants around the world. Currently, major players like Roblox and Facebook have already announced plans to enter the space. The architecture of the metaverse is based on a decentralized network, where the users will have full control over their data and experiences. The purpose of this chapter is to provide readers with a comprehensive view of the metaverse and an understanding of how Internet giants are positioning themselves within the metaverse, as well as the fundamental architecture of the metaverse.
