Abstract
Children with dyslipidemia have an increased risk of becoming adults with dyslipidemia who are at risk for premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) and strokes. In 1992, the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) presented the first guidelines for pediatric lipidology, focusing primarily on low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Today, the most comprehensive analysis comes from the 2011 National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Pediatric Guidelines and the 2019 American Heart Association (AHA) updated guidelines. Universal lipid screening is recommended for all children between ages 9 and 11 years and a repeat lipid screen is recommended between 17 and 21 years of age. In addition, all children and adolescents aged 2 years or above who have risk factors/conditions for premature CVD should undergo selective screening.
