Abstract
When businesses such as rental car companies close down because of disruptive competition, there is little public damage that occurs beyond loss of jobs and taxable revenue. But when news entities go out of business, there may be no analog there to replace them. When digital mobile technology drives news agencies out of business, the public is deprived of their most important pipeline of independent information. The growing news desertification of America is a problem not just for the news industry but for democracy.
