Abstract

This chapter analyzes how the historical and cultural value of individualism in the USA has contributed to both expansion and limitation of maternal autonomy. In the current culturally polarized environment, maternal autonomy is a source of conflict that influences individual choice about pregnancy timing, continuation, and birth practices.
