Abstract
While often marked by the political, legal, and social differences within its countries, South America has great potential for cross-border journalism. Most countries have a common language, as well as a shared history and culture. They also face similar issues that are not only local in nature or scope. Not surprisingly, cross-border reporting initiatives in the region have expanded over the last decade, often with support of investigative journalism networks and digital innovation organizations, to produce nuanced-yet-complex stories on matters such as private businesses, government accountability, and drug trafficking. These stories also showcase the trials faced by journalism practitioners who are not necessarily trained in the skills and tools to conduct this kind of reporting and who often face threats and security risks in doing their job.
