Abstract

Injuries to the esophagus due to external trauma are rare. They may be classified as penetrating (knife, gunshot) or blunt. These injuries can be life-threatening on their own due to digestive contamination of neck, mediastinum, or abdomen depending on their location and they are often associated with significant concomitant damage of surrounding vital organs. The presentation, diagnostic workup, and treatment vary greatly depending on the mechanism and site of injury. A high degree of suspicion to enable early diagnosis and timely therapeutic intervention is the key to successful management. The present chapter outlines the principles of emergency management of traumatic esophageal injury.
