Abstract

The collapse of the Soviet Union and the Regime Change of 1989–1991 in Central and Eastern Europe gave rise to a string of historic events on a global scale, the impact of which was instantly recognised by contemporaries. Conservative and liberal circles of business, politics, and ideology tended to interpret this turn of events as an inevitable triumph of effective market economy and the pluralistic political system associated with it, over the despotic party-state and its centralised, bureaucratic planned economy that affected society at large.
