The Coronavirus Pandemic and Inequality

Abstract

This chapter reviews how the coronavirus pandemic, and resulting policy responses, unfolded in Ethiopia between early 2020 and October 2022. As measured by the number of official Coronavirus cases and attributable deaths, the pandemic in Ethiopia has been relatively mild compared to other low-income countries, and particularly mild compared to high-income countries such as the United States. During the coronavirus pandemic, Ethiopia has faced numerous challenges such as civil conflict, rising inflation and floods that have complicated the government’s economic and health policy responses to the virus.
